Buying a Used Mazda CX-5 in Miami: Model Years, Recalls and What to Inspect
September 16 2026 - By Brickell Mazda

No Mazda CX-5 year is an automatic walk-away, but several need extra checks by VIN. Certain 2018 and 2019 models are in safety recall 5321K. 2018 to 2021 engines with cylinder deactivation are covered by Mazda service information, not a recall. Certain 2019 to 2020 turbos qualify for warranty extension CSP11, and certain 2021 turbos fall under campaign SSPD5. Our editorial preference is a documented 2022 to 2025 CX-5.

Prepared by Brickell Mazda, 618 SW 8th St, Miami. This guide covers U.S.-market CX-5 model years from 2013 through 2026. Inventory changes; check current listings for availability. Published September 16, 2026; updated September 30, 2026.

Which Mazda CX-5 years should you avoid?

None outright, but don't buy any 2018 to 2021 CX-5 blind. Those years carry Mazda cylinder head service information, a safety recall on certain 2018 and 2019 cars, and turbo campaigns on certain 2019 to 2021 cars. None of that makes them bad cars. It makes paperwork and an inspection essential.

Every U.S. model year, with its engine, gearbox and the documented items to check. Treat the verdict as a starting point, then judge the car.

Model years Engine Transmission Documented items to check Verdict
2013 (first generation) SKYACTIV-G 2.0L, 155 hp 6-speed automatic; 6-speed manual on front-drive Sport Oldest cars in the range; condition and history matter most Budget option if condition and records check out
2014 to 2016 2.0L, 155 hp, and 2.5L, 184 hp; availability varies by year and trim. For 2016, Sport manual models use the 2.0L, while Sport automatic, Touring and Grand Touring models use the 2.5L 6-speed automatic; 6-speed manual on front-drive 2.0L Sport No cylinder deactivation; mostly age-related wear Budget buy with records
2017 (second generation) SKYACTIV-G 2.5L, 187 hp 6-speed automatic Predates cylinder deactivation and sits outside recall 5321K Value pick among older cars, subject to condition
2018 2.5L, 187 hp, cylinder deactivation added 6-speed automatic Safety recall 5321K (fuel pump) on certain VINs; cylinder head service information for cylinder-deactivation engines Check recall completion and engine records
2019 to 2020 2.5L, 187 hp with cylinder deactivation; 2.5L turbo, 250 hp on 93 octane (227 hp on 87 for 2019); 2.2L diesel on the 2019 Signature 6-speed automatic 2019: safety recall 5321K on certain VINs. Both years: cylinder head service information for non-turbo 2.5L engines with cylinder deactivation. Turbo: warranty extension CSP11 on certain VINs Check recall, records and CSP11 status by VIN
2021 2.5L with cylinder deactivation; 2.5L turbo 6-speed automatic Cylinder head service information for non-turbo 2.5L engines with cylinder deactivation; Turbo: campaign SSPD5 on eligible VINs for valve stem seals and oil consumption Inspect carefully; check engine service information and VIN-specific campaigns
2022 to 2025 2.5L, 187 hp; 2.5L turbo, 256 hp on 93 octane; AWD standard 6-speed automatic Oil seepage bulletin covers cylinder-deactivation engines through 2023; 2025 standard front crash prevention rated Poor in the IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test Our editorial preference, subject to condition
2026 (third generation) 2.5L, 187 hp, 186 lb-ft; AWD standard; no turbo 6-speed automatic Too new for a used track record Buy new or nearly new

Eligibility for every recall and campaign is VIN-specific.

What changed by generation

Mazda added cylinder deactivation for 2018. Its cylinder head service alert covers 2018 to 2021 CX-5 2.5L engines with that feature. It is repair guidance, not a safety recall, and not proof that every listed car needs a repair. Have any leak or running concern diagnosed.

For 2022, Mazda made i-ACTIV AWD standard and rated the turbo at 256 hp on 93 octane. The all-new 2026 uses a 187 hp 2.5L with standard AWD and no turbo.

Which CX-5 years are worth paying up for?

Our editorial preference is 2022 to 2025, subject to the individual car's condition. You get standard AWD, the refreshed cabin and, from 2023, the rear seat belt pretensioners IIHS notes. A 2013 to 2017 can be a sound budget option if its performance suits you and its condition and history check out.

Which Mazda CX-5 is the best?

For most Miami buyers, our pick is a 2023 to 2025 non-turbo. It has the later safety hardware and standard AWD, and the non-turbo engine suits I-95 and the causeways. Choose the turbo for more power; its top rating assumes 93-octane fuel, though regular fuel is permitted at lower output.

Which Mazda CX-5 is the most reliable?

The sources we reviewed do not establish one CX-5 model year as the most reliable, so we won't name one. Condition, maintenance history, mileage and a professional inspection should guide the purchase.

What does a Miami CX-5 hide?

Possible flood damage, corrosion and heat wear. Check available title and history records for flood or salvage brands, but a clean title or report does not rule out unreported flood damage. Combine title and history checks with a professional inspection; no single check can rule out all prior flood damage.

Flood history

Start with Florida's Motor Vehicle Information Check and an NMVTIS title report. NICB VINCheck searches participating insurers' theft and salvage records, so a clean result does not guarantee a clean history. NICB lists musty odors, water stains, silt and mismatched upholstery as warning signs.

Salt air and heat

Inspect for corrosion on brake hardware, underbody fasteners and connectors, particularly on cars with coastal, saltwater or flood exposure. Our known-issues guide covers what we look for. Test the A/C too; our A/C guide explains a proper check.

The ten-point screening checklist before you buy

Use this list for initial screening, then arrange a professional pre-purchase inspection. Record requests and VIN or campaign confirmation may take time or incur a fee.

  1. Check all open safety recalls by VIN at NHTSA, then ask a Mazda dealer to confirm whether 5321K applied and, if so, whether the repair was completed.
  2. Run the title and history checks above, including NICB VINCheck.
  3. On a 2019 or 2020 turbo, ask about CSP11. On a 2021 turbo, ask a Mazda dealer to confirm SSPD5 eligibility, repair history and any remaining extended coverage by VIN.
  4. Compare the service history with the Mazda maintenance schedule that matches how the car was actually driven.
  5. On a 2018 to 2023 non-turbo, look for oil seepage on the engine front cover.
  6. Check coolant only when the engine is cold; never remove a hot, pressurized cap. Coolant smell is one of the symptoms Mazda lists for cylinder head concerns.
  7. Compare warning-lamp behavior with the owner's manual, and have codes and monitor readiness checked; cleared codes can hide recent faults. Our check engine light guide explains the basics.
  8. Test the A/C at idle in the afternoon, not just on the highway.
  9. With the seller's permission, have a technician inspect accessible carpet edges, seat rails, underbody areas and connectors for water damage.
  10. Use the infotainment screen for five minutes. Freezing or rebooting is worth noting.

The professional inspection should cover brakes, tires, suspension, the underbody, a diagnostic scan and a road test.

Is a certified pre-owned CX-5 worth more than a private sale at the same money?

At comparable prices, a genuinely Mazda-certified CX-5 may offer valuable additional coverage. Compare the actual warranty remaining, condition, mileage and history before deciding. The CPO powertrain warranty runs 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the car's original purchase as new, subject to Mazda warranty terms.

What you get Mazda Certified Pre-Owned Typical private sale
Inspection 160-point inspection by a factory-trained Mazda technician Whatever you arrange and pay for
Vehicle coverage Any remaining New Vehicle Limited Warranty, followed by a CPO Limited Vehicle Warranty lasting 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the new-vehicle warranty has expired, CPO coverage begins at purchase. No deductible on covered repairs; exclusions apply Any remaining transferable factory warranty
Powertrain coverage 7-year/100,000-mile CPO Limited Powertrain Warranty, whichever comes first, measured from the vehicle's original purchase as new Any remaining factory powertrain coverage, eligible VIN-specific extensions such as CSP11 or SSPD5, and other applicable contracts
Roadside help 24-hour Emergency Roadside Assistance for the length of the CPO powertrain warranty Your own plan, if you have one
History report Vehicle history report included, per Mazda You buy your own
Transfer Both CPO warranties transfer to the next owner at no cost, per Mazda Depends on the warranty or contract; confirm before purchase

Don't infer certification from age. Ask the dealer to confirm current Mazda CPO eligibility, certification status and the warranty remaining on the specific VIN, and don't pay a certified price for an uncertified car.

Is the Mazda CX-5 worth buying?

Yes, for most people who want a compact SUV that's enjoyable to drive. Mazda says the CX-5 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award every year from its debut through 2017, and the 2026 model earned a Top Safety Pick+. It's the wrong choice if fuel economy tops your list or you need a third row.

Awards depend on year, equipment and criteria: the 2019 award and Mazda's 2017 Top Safety Pick+ apply only with specific headlights or optional equipment. Review the IIHS ratings for the exact model year and equipment. Crashworthiness and crash-prevention ratings measure different things and do not guarantee outcomes in a real collision.

Who should look elsewhere: if you want better mileage than the 2026 CX-5's 26 mpg combined, the 2026 CX-50 Hybrid carries an EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined. If you need a third row, look at a CX-90.

Frequently asked questions

Which used CX-5 years need extra checks?

Engine type and VIN matter more than a blanket year exclusion. 2018 to 2021 cars with cylinder deactivation, certain 2018 and 2019 cars under recall 5321K, and 2019 to 2021 turbos covered by CSP11 or SSPD5 all deserve a closer look. Review the relevant recalls, service information and campaigns, then inspect the individual vehicle.

What if the check engine light comes on during a test drive?

Pause the deal and have the code read first. On a 2018 or 2019, Mazda's recall 5321K documents list a check engine light and rough running as possible signs of the fuel pump fault. Check all open recalls by VIN, and ask a Mazda dealer whether any campaign applies. A code tells you where to look, not what the repair costs.

Does every 2019 to 2020 CX-5 Turbo have the extended coolant leak coverage?

No. CSP11 is a warranty extension, not a recall. Certain 2019 to 2020 CX-5 2.5T vehicles qualify for the specified cylinder head coolant-leak repair for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original warranty start date, whichever comes first. Per Mazda's dealer letter, dealer confirmation is required.
