Mazda CX-50 or CX-5: Which One Fits a Downtown Miami Garage?
October 05 2026 - By Brickell Mazda
A 2026 Mazda CX-50 and a 2026 Mazda CX-5 parked side by side on the Brickell Mazda lot in Miami.

The 2026 Mazda CX-50 has the lower starting MSRP: $29,900 against $29,990 for the CX-5, both before the $1,595 destination charge. At the top of each range, the CX-50's 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus starts at $42,900, while the CX-5's 2.5 S Premium Plus starts at $38,990, before options and destination. For a tight downtown garage, the gas-powered CX-50 is about 3 inches lower and 1 inch narrower with the mirrors extended. The CX-50 Hybrid is taller than the gas version.

Contact us to confirm availability of both models and arrange a comparison. Check posted clearance, the vehicle's actual height including accessories, and any lower obstructions along the entire route. Allow clearance for ramps and transitions, and follow building restrictions. Published October 5, 2026. Prices, specifications and ratings below are as of that date.

Verdict: If your garage has a low clearance bar, the gas-powered CX-50 is the one to test first. The CX-50 also offers turbo and hybrid options. If you want more headroom and more maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded, the CX-5 is worth comparing. Sit in both to assess seating height and comfort.

Is the Mazda CX-5 or CX-50 more expensive?

At the starting line the CX-5's MSRP is $90 higher: $29,990 for the CX-5 2.5 S against $29,900 for the CX-50 2.5 S Select. The ranges then split. The CX-5's top trim, the 2.5 S Premium Plus, starts at $38,990. The CX-50 climbs higher because it offers trims the CX-5 does not have, ending at a $42,900 starting MSRP for the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here is how each ladder steps up, per Mazda's published starting MSRPs.

Options, accessories and premium paint may increase MSRP. For the advertised price of a specific vehicle, see its individual listing or contact us.

Trim names do not line up one to one, so compare equipment, not labels. A CX-5 2.5 S Premium and a CX-50 2.5 S Premium are $2,000 apart in starting MSRP and are not equipped the same way.

Will a CX-50 or CX-5 fit a downtown Miami garage?

Both are compact SUVs, but the gas-powered CX-50 has the lower published roof height. Mazda lists it at 63.5 to 63.9 inches tall and the CX-5 at 66.7 inches, a difference of roughly 3 inches. The CX-50 Hybrid is 64.9 to 65.8 inches tall. With mirrors extended, the CX-5 is 81.8 inches wide and the CX-50 is 80.8 inches. The gas-powered CX-50 is 1.2 inches longer than the CX-5.

Length, width and height all matter when assessing a parking space. Turning room and ramp geometry also matter, so check the actual vehicle and the route through your garage.

Model Length Width, body / mirrors out Height
2026 Mazda CX-5 184.6 in 73.2 / 81.8 in 66.7 in
2026 Mazda CX-50 (gas) 185.8 in 72.9 / 80.8 in 63.5 to 63.9 in
2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid 186.1 in 72.9 / 80.8 in 64.9 to 65.8 in

Source: Mazda USA, CX-5 vs CX-50 comparison, retrieved October 5, 2026. Dimensions vary by trim. Check the exact vehicle, including roof accessories, before relying on a published height.

Two practical notes. First, the CX-50 Hybrid sits taller than the gas CX-50, so if height is your constraint, check the exact trim. Second, the 1-inch difference with mirrors extended is small. Folding the mirrors may help with a narrow opening, but it does not change body width or the space needed to open the doors.

Do not assume either one fits. Check posted clearance, the vehicle's actual height including accessories, and any lower obstructions along the entire route. Allow clearance for ramps and transitions, and follow building restrictions.

Does ground clearance or AWD matter in Miami?

All-wheel drive comes standard on both. Ground clearance differs: Mazda lists 8.3 to 8.6 inches for the gas CX-50 and 8.0 to 8.2 inches for the CX-5. The CX-50 Hybrid sits lower, at 7.8 to 8.1 inches.

Ground clearance can matter on steep condo ramps, garage speed humps and uneven parking surfaces. However, clearance alone does not determine whether the underside will clear a ramp transition; approach angle, wheelbase, load and ramp geometry also matter.

Neither AWD nor extra ground clearance makes floodwater safe. Do not drive through flooded roads or standing water of uncertain depth. Turn around and use another route.

Which one offers a turbo or a hybrid, and what does the step cost?

Only the CX-50 offers either for 2026. The CX-5 comes with one engine, a 187-hp 2.5L, and Mazda says a CX-5 hybrid is planned to launch in 2027. The CX-50 offers a 2.5 Turbo making 227 hp on regular fuel or 256 hp on premium, starting at $37,900 MSRP, and a Hybrid with 219 hp of total system output, starting at $34,750 MSRP.

The turbo suits drivers who want stronger acceleration or greater towing capacity. It is the only version of these two models rated to pull up to 3,500 pounds with Towing mode and a Genuine Mazda hitch. The gas 2.5 S CX-50 tows up to 2,000 pounds, and the CX-5 and CX-50 Hybrid tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The starting-MSRP step from the CX-50 2.5 S Premium to the 2.5 Turbo is $3,000 ($37,900 against $34,900). The step from the gas CX-50 2.5 S Preferred to the Hybrid Preferred is $2,350 ($34,750 against $32,400). Compare the equipment as well as the powertrains before deciding which difference is worthwhile.

Sources: Mazda USA, 2026 CX-5, Mazda USA, 2026 CX-50 trims and specifications and Mazda USA, 2026 CX-50 Hybrid, retrieved October 5, 2026. MSRP excludes taxes, title, license fees and the $1,595 destination charge (Alaska $1,640). Actual dealer price will vary. Maximum towing capacity requires proper equipment. Passenger, cargo, accessory and trailer tongue weight must remain within the vehicle's payload, axle, gross vehicle and gross combined weight limits. Consult the owner's manual.

What does fuel cost over 12,000 Miami miles?

About $1,884 a year for a CX-5 or a gas 2.5 S CX-50, and about $1,289 for the CX-50 Hybrid, based on EPA-estimated combined MPG and Florida's AAA average of $4.082 a gallon for regular on October 4, 2026. That is a calculated saving of about $595 a year for the hybrid.

Model and powertrain EPA-estimated MPG, city / hwy / combined Calculated fuel cost, 12,000 miles
2026 CX-5 2.5 S (all trims) 24 / 30 / 26 about $1,884
2026 CX-50 2.5 S 24 / 30 / 26 about $1,884
2026 CX-50 2.5 Turbo, regular fuel 23 / 29 / 25 about $1,959
2026 CX-50 2.5 Turbo, premium fuel 23 / 29 / 25 about $2,337
2026 CX-50 Hybrid 39 / 37 / 38 about $1,289

Calculation: 12,000 miles divided by EPA-estimated combined MPG, multiplied by the AAA Florida state average as of October 4, 2026 ($4.082 regular, $4.8685 premium). MPG from Mazda USA, CX-5 vs CX-50 comparison, retrieved October 5, 2026. These calculations use a statewide average, not a Miami-specific price. EPA estimates are for comparison only. Your mileage and fuel prices will vary. The Turbo premium-fuel row uses the same EPA estimate at the premium price.

Compared with the gas CX-50 2.5 S Preferred, the CX-50 Hybrid Preferred carries a $2,350 starting-MSRP premium. At the stated mileage, fuel price and EPA estimates, calculated fuel savings would offset that difference in approximately four years. This is a fuel-only comparison and excludes taxes, financing, maintenance, insurance and resale value. Lower annual mileage extends the calculated payback period.

The hybrid's EPA estimates are higher in city driving (39 MPG) than on the highway (37 MPG). That may be relevant to a stop-and-go downtown commute, although actual results depend on traffic, driving habits and other conditions.

Which one has fewer problems, and which used CX-5 should you check?

There is not yet enough long-term evidence to rank the all-new 2026 CX-5 against the CX-50 for reliability. The 2026 CX-5 is the first year of a new generation. Safety-test ratings can be compared, but they do not establish reliability.

Shopping a used CX-5 instead?

That is a separate question from the new-model comparison. Certain 2018 and 2019 CX-5s were included in fuel-pump recall 5321K (NHTSA campaign 21V-875). Recalls are VIN-specific, so check the exact vehicle at NHTSA.gov/recalls. Before buying any used CX-5, ask for a VIN-specific recall and service-history check. New-model safety ratings

Both the 2026 CX-5 and 2026 CX-50 earned a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, according to Mazda's July 9, 2026 announcement and the IIHS ratings page for the 2026 CX-50. An award does not mean every individual test result is identical. Mazda also reports a NHTSA 5-Star Overall Safety Rating for the 2026 CX-50. Check NHTSA for the 2026 CX-5's current rating.

Two details from the IIHS page: the CX-50's whiplash prevention result is Poor. The tested seat was a power cloth seat; IIHS applies the result to 2025 and 2026 models. For headlights, naturally aspirated gas trims and Hybrid Preferred/Premium receive Acceptable, while turbo trims and Hybrid Premium Plus receive Good. If you drive dark roads often, compare the exact trim's headlights.

The verdict, by buyer

Choose the CX-50 if you want the lower roof height of the gas version, the turbo's power or greater towing capacity, or hybrid fuel economy without waiting for the planned CX-5 hybrid. Check the exact trim against your garage and towing needs.

Choose the CX-5 if you want more headroom and more maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded, plus the 12.9-inch or available 15.6-inch touchscreen with Google built-in. The CX-50 offers more cargo space behind the upright rear seats in Mazda's comparison, so consider how you normally carry passengers and luggage.

When a lower trim may make more sense: if towing and stronger acceleration are not priorities, a lower trim may offer better value. Compare comfort and equipment features before deciding against the CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Choosing premium increases fuel cost; premium is not required for normal operation.

Mazda CX-50 vs CX-5 FAQ

Is the Mazda CX-50 worth buying?

Yes, for the right driver. The gas lineup starts at $29,900 MSRP before destination, and the model earned a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+. It is the only one of these two models with turbo and hybrid options; the Turbo can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. If headroom or maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is your priority, compare the CX-5.

Is there a better SUV than the Mazda CX-5?

Better depends on the job. In the Mazda lineup, the CX-50 Hybrid offers an EPA-estimated 38 MPG combined, the CX-70 and CX-90 are larger options, and the CX-30 is the smaller option to compare for tight parking. The CX-5 remains a practical compact SUV to consider.

Is a CX-50 bigger than a CX-5?

Longer, but not bigger everywhere. Per Mazda, the gas CX-50 is 1.2 inches longer than the CX-5, about 3 inches lower and 1 inch narrower with the mirrors extended. The Hybrid is taller than the gas CX-50. The CX-5 has more headroom and more maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded; the CX-50 has more cargo space with the rear seats upright.

Does the 2026 CX-5 come as a hybrid?

No. Every U.S.-market 2026 CX-5 uses the 187-hp 2.5L engine with a 6-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. Mazda says a CX-5 hybrid is planned to launch in 2027. The 2026 CX-50 Hybrid starts at $34,750 MSRP before destination; contact us to confirm availability.

Does the CX-50 Turbo need premium fuel?

No. It runs on regular 87-octane fuel and makes 227 horsepower. Premium 93-octane raises output to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, per Mazda. Choosing premium increases fuel cost; premium is not required for normal operation. Follow the fuel guidance in the owner's manual.

Which one tows more, the CX-50 or the CX-5?

The CX-50 2.5 Turbo, at up to 3,500 pounds with Towing mode and a Genuine Mazda hitch. The gas 2.5 S CX-50 is rated up to 2,000 pounds, and the CX-5 and CX-50 Hybrid up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. Maximum towing capacity requires proper equipment. Passenger, cargo, accessory and trailer tongue weight must remain within the vehicle's payload, axle, gross vehicle and gross combined weight limits. Consult the owner's manual.
