Two Rows Good, Three Rows Better?
While the two vehicles are the same size, the key difference between the 2026 Mazda CX-70 and the 2026 Mazda CX-90 is the number of rows of seats:
- With the Mazda CX-70, you get two rows of seats, with room for up to five passengers.
- The Mazda CX-90 adds a third row of seats, so you can seat up to eight passengers.
This means choosing between the two can actually be quite simple. Drivers who have larger families or want the extra room when going out on the town in Miami with friends may want the Mazda CX-90. But other drivers may prefer the Mazda CX-70 if they don’t need space for more than five passengers. It all comes down to personal needs and preferences.
Similar Passenger and Cargo Volume
Interestingly, both the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90 have 141.6 cubic feet of passenger space. However, because of the different seating configurations, the two vehicles divide that space differently. For example, the Mazda CX-70 has 59.2 inches of shoulder room in the front row and 58.1 inches in back, while the Mazda CX-90 features 57.2 inches in front, 58.1 inches in the second row, and 53.3 inches in the third row.
Still, both models have 41.7 inches of legroom in the first row and 39.4 inches in the second row, with the third row in the Mazda CX-90 providing 30.4 inches of legroom. This is a testament to the ability of the designers at Mazda to make sure there is sufficient space for passengers in both models.
The flexible cargo space in the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90 is also comparable. You will get up to 75.3 cubic feet of space for cargo in the Mazda CX-70 and 75.2 cubic feet of space behind the driver in the Mazda CX-90. With just the third row folded down in the Mazda CX-90, you get 40.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which is nearly the same as the 39.6 cubic feet in the back of the CX-70.
Comparable Powertrain Options
No matter which model you choose, you will get the same three powertrain options in the 2026 Mazda CX-70 and 2026 Mazda CX-90. This lets you decide the kind of performance you want out of your vehicle.
All three powertrains are surprisingly fuel efficient for a sporty midsize SUV, and they come standard with Mazda’s i-Activ AWD® system. This all-wheel drive system will come in handy, especially in inclement weather, by providing added traction.
Turbo
The first of the three powertrains is a 3.3-liter turbocharged e-Skyactiv®-G I-6 engine. This comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and has a mild-hybrid boost. As a result, you get superior fuel efficiency and power from the addition of electric propulsion. This engine is featured on all trims with the 3.3 Turbo designation.
This base powertrain provides 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The three-row model is slightly heavier, so while the 2026 Mazda CX-90 gets an EPA-estimated 23 MPG in the city, the 2026 Mazda CX-70 does slightly better with an estimated 24 MPG in the city.
Turbo S
The second engine is also a 3.3-liter turbocharged e-Skyactiv®-G I-6. However, the 3.3 Turbo S trims get a slight boost in output. This results in the engine producing 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both the 2026 Mazda CX-70 and 2026 Mazda CX-90 achieve similar fuel economy when equipped with this engine, with an EPA-estimated 25 MPG combined. This is the engine to choose if you want a little more speed and acceleration in your SUV.
PHEV
Mazda also offers a plug-in hybrid option for the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90. This is a 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv®-PHEV I-4, pairing a four-cylinder gas engine with a 91-horsepower electric motor powered by a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted in the lower frame. The combined output of this PHEV powertrain is 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
At slower speeds, the electric motor provides most of the propulsion, with the gas engine charging the battery. Unlike a normal hybrid, you can plug this vehicle in to recharge the battery and avoid using the gasoline engine altogether. If you opt for the 2026 Mazda CX-70, you get an estimated 32 miles of electric range, while the 2026 Mazda CX-90 provides an estimated 27 miles of range.
Comparable Technology
One of the areas where Mazda excels is in technological innovation. When it comes to infotainment features, Mazda has always been on the cutting edge. This is clearly the case with the 2026 Mazda CX-70 and 2026 Mazda CX-90, both of which feature the technology to keep you and your passengers connected and entertained wherever you go in Miami or beyond.
The technology on both of these models will provide you with the connectivity you want in your vehicle. Each features Mazda’s infotainment system with a color touchscreen. However, while all trim levels of the 2026 Mazda CX-70 come with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, the base model 2026 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select has a slightly smaller 10.25-inch screen.
In addition, all Mazda CX-70 trims include standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a wireless charger, so you can connect your smartphone and keep it charged even if you left your cable at home. With the Mazda CX-90, these features are not available on the base 3.3 Turbo Select trim.
Still, no matter which model you choose, you will be able to make hands-free calls and texts while streaming your favorite music over the vehicle’s audio system.
Advanced Safety Features
Both of these models feature many advanced driver assistance features that will help you avoid accidents and reduce the impact of unavoidable collisions.
- One of the most common causes of highway accidents is lane changes. Sometimes you may not see another motorist when you are changing lanes. Standard Blind Spot Monitoring on both the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90 will alert you to the presence of other vehicles when you signal to change lanes.
- The two models also come standard with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which will come in handy when backing out of a parking space at the mall. If the system detects a pedestrian or other vehicle about to cross behind your Mazda, it will alert you, so you can avoid an accident.
- Higher trims even include Front Cross Traffic Alert, which you won't find in competing vehicles. This functions like Rear Cross Traffic Alert, except it works when driving forward, which can come in handy when you have limited visibility.
These are just a few of the many standard and available driver-assist systems offered by the Mazda CX-70 and Mazda CX-90.
Two Great Models for Miami Drivers
The 2026 Mazda CX-70 and 2026 Mazda CX-90 are both exceptional vehicles. The key difference between these two midsize SUVs is the number of seats. While the Mazda CX-70 seats up to five passengers, the Mazda CX-90 gives you room for up to eight.
Otherwise, they offer the same engine options with comparable performance and fuel economy, a similar array of impressive safety features, and an intuitive infotainment system. However, if you opt for the Mazda CX-90, you may have to come up one trim level to get the same features that come standard on all trims of the Mazda CX-70.
In either case, you will be well served by visiting our dealership and driving home in one of these Mazda SUVs.
